antibiotics use and resistance in animals

The mission of AMCRA is to collect and analyze all data related to antimicrobial use and resistance in animals in Belgium and to communicate the outcomes in a neutral and objective manner, in order to safeguard both public and animal health and welfare, and to achieve a durable policy of veterinary antimicrobial use in Belgium. AMCRA has become operational from the 2nd of January 2012 and will propose guidelines to direct the whole animal industry towards a rational reduction of antimicrobial use.

Antibiotic Awareness Day 18 november 2014 - press releases AMCRA-BELPORK

For the occasion of Antibiotic Awareness Day, november 18th 2014, AMCRA, the centre of expertise on antimicrobial consumption and resistance in animals, wishes to report on the most recent evolution which is part of the Vision 2020 plan of AMCRA. In particular, a first important step has been taken, due in part to the pioneering role of BELPORK, in order to achieve a global data collection system and data-analysis of antimicrobial consumption on the herd level.


Positioning Belgium in the European sales of veterinary antimicrobial agents

In the 4th ESVAC Report listing the sales of antibiotics for the various countries in Europe in 2012 compared with 2011, Belgium is in 6th place. AMCRA has been identified by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as the motor behind the fall in the sales in antibiotics in Belgium.


AMCRA Vision 2020

All AMCRA members/sectors developed a vision 2020. The AMCRA 2020 vision statement comprises 10 objectives and action points which will be specified in greater detail in cooperation with the relevant authorities and players involved.


Our objectives for 2014-2015:

 Objective 1:

 Finalisation of recommendations of the working groups on stocks, horses, companion animals, data collection relating to medicated feed and alternatives (vaccination and biosecurity) as well as proposals by the pilot group for the 2013 working year.


Our objectives for the year 2013

1. Sensitizing veterinarians and farmers to using antimicrobial products in a well-considered way and to respecting the chapters of the antibiotic guides that are applicable to them.

Our achievements in 2012

 To realize AMCRA's mission, the following strategic objectives were defined for the first working year in 2012; AMCRA has established a timetable for meeting these objectives:

1. Drafting antibiotic guides to promote well-considered usage of antibiotics in pigs, poultry, beef cattle and dairy cattle.
